Hung Liu
b. China/United States, 1948

This is an image from long ago, far away . . . in a way, I have no connection with her at all. But somehow you do make a connection with your subject . . . because when you have a human figure in any photograph or painting, you always ask who is this . . . especially if you paint her face, you know, you are face to face with her.

Hung Liu, in “Hung Liu,” Spark, coproduced by KQED and the Bay Area Video Coalition, aired February 2005 (posted September 19, 2009), 9:12 minutes, available at youtube.com/watch?v=LV8e43K2zCI&feature=youtu.be.
